Things Which Must Shortly Come to Pass is a novel in episodes. Having gelled over the last decade (hey, it’s a process), the novel is ready for an editor and publishing strategy. A quick overview:
Things Which Must Shortly Come to Pass
Irma McAllister Hamilton suspects her grandson’s seizures may be mystical experiences. She holds in them an unresolvable hope for a connection to her long dead brother and some affirmation of an afterlife. Sixteen-year old Charlie only knows that the spells could prevent him from getting a driver’s license. He gets good at hiding. Set in North Carolina’s Cape Fear River Valley in the early 1980s, the novel approaches the steadily developing mysteries of life and our awkward inability to communicate beneath them. There are plenty of costume changes. Someone dies.
A related novel is also in the works. Covering the same period as Things Which Must Shortly Come to Pass, this work will give perspective to the host of Campbell Run residents, focusing on unexpectedly intimate relationships. I’ve borrowed both title and theme from Tolstoy. That By Which Men Live explores the roles we play in each others lives.
Finally, somewhere around 2019, I ought to be working on the final novel in the related series, the story of a calling denied and the life of Irma Hamilton.
